History Of Thanksgiving
The first Thanksgiving happened in 1621. Colonists chose a day in late November to celebrate their bountiful harvest. They were joined by members of the Wampanoag tribe for this magnificent autumn feast. Their Thanksgiving menu included fowl, fish corn and nuts, but no turkey. That custom didn’t begin until many years later.
Since that chilly day so long ago, the fourth Thursday in November has come to represent a time of joy and giving thanks. President George Washington recognized the importance of this event, and proclaimed the first official Thanksgiving in 1789. Other Presidents also observed this occasion, but it wasn’t a national holiday until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln made it an annual celebration.
